Distributed systems allow you to have a node in both cities, allowing traffic to hit the node that is closest to it. For a distributed system to work, though, you need the software running on those machines to be specifically designed for running on multiple computers at the same time and handling the problems that come along with it.

The purpose of a distributed file system (DFS) is to allow users of physically distributed computers to share data and storage resources by using a common file system. A typical configuration for a DFS is a collection of workstations and mainframes connected by a local area network (LAN). Distributed systems literature is abundant, but as a practitioner, I often find it difficult to know where to start or how to synthesize this knowledge without a more formal background. “Computing” has to do with running a computer application for a user or group of users. “Distributed” has to do with application production in many places, not just one place. •Distributed system definition: –A collection of distinct processes which are spatially separated and which communicate with one another by exchanging messages.

One way distributed systems can achieve uniformity is through a common layer to support the underlying hardware and operating systems. This common layer is known as a middleware, where it provides services beyond what is already provided by Operating systems, to enable various features and components of a distributed system to enhance its

In the initial days, computer systems were huge and also very expensive. Because of this reason few firms had less number of computers and those systems were operated independently as there was a lack of knowledge to connect them. In this bonus video, I discuss distributed computing, distributed software systems, and related concepts. In this lesson, I explain:* What is a Distributed Sy An ideal distributed system, which provides all the above-mentioned transparencies, is not always possible and all these transparencies may not be required by all the distributed systems. The need for any particular transparency mainly depends on the application of the distributed system.

LOCUS and MICROS are the best examples of distributed operating systems. Using LOCUS operating system it was possible to access local and distant files in uniform manner. This feature enabled a user to log on any node of the network and to utilize the resources in a network without the reference of his/her location.

Distributed systems can be considered to be more reliable than a central system because if the system has only one instance of a critical peripheral/component, like the CPU, network interface, disk, and so if that one instance fails, the system will go down completely.
